Lord's Cricket Ground, London CNN —At Lord’s Cricket Ground in the quiet, well-heeled streets of northwest London, different architectural eras collide together in a mishmash of mismatching styles representing the old and the new. And never is that collision between the old and new more evident than when Lord’s, the self-styled “home” of cricket and one of its most prestigious grounds, hosts the annual schoolboys fixture Eton vs. Harrow. CNN has contacted Eton and Harrow for comment but had not received a response at the time of publication. "We requested China to allow us to be a part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and Belt and Road Initiative... The Pakistan "economic corridor" refers to the huge flagship section of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) in Afghanistan's neighbour. Asked about the MCC talks, Azizi said discussions had been delayed because the mine was near a historical site, but they were still ongoing. [1/6] Cricket - Ashes - Fifth Test - England v Australia - The Oval, London, Britain - July 29, 2023 England head coach Brendon McCullum during the warm up before the start of the day's play Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers/File PhotoLONDON, Aug 1 (Reuters) - England coach Brendon McCullum said he was more than happy to share a beer with the Australia squad now that the Ashes series is over, having suggested after the second test that he wouldn't do so following a controversialincident. The series ended 2-2 after England won the final test at The Oval by 49 runs on Monday, so Australia retained the Ashes urn. "Yeah, we'll have a beer," McCullum said with a laugh when asked by reporters about his previous comments. "I can't imagine we'll be having a beer with them any time soon," McCullum told the BBC after the incident. "Ashes series have all these twists and turns and moments which people talk about and are able to remember them by, and that was certainly one of those," he said.

The incident, whilst not against the laws of cricket, divided many as to whether it went against the spirit of cricket, including many inside Lord’s. Lord's Cricket Ground, London CNN —Australia took a commanding 2-0 lead in this year’s Ashes Series after winning an ill-tempered Test match against England on Sunday. Speaking on BBC’s Test Match Special, England captain Ben Stokes said that he would have withdrawn the appeal if he was in the position of Australian captain Pat Cummins. The majority of England fans inside the ground were left furious by the decision and started vociferously chanting at and booing the Australian players. Once the wicket of Stokes fell, Australia sauntered to a win – beating England by 43 runs – but discussions surrounding the controversial run out will continue for the foreseeable future. The third Ashes Test will be held in Headingley, Leeds, on July 6.

The dismissal triggered long and loud booing from the Lord's crowd and saw Australian players verbally abused by MCC members in the stadium's usually staid Long Room. With England eventually losing by 43 runs to trail 2-0 in the five-test series, McCullum made it clear the stumping had strained relations. 'NO SNEAKINESS'Disgruntled MCC members verbally abused Australia players as they walked through the pavilion at the lunch interval, prompting opener Usman Khawaja to remonstrate with several of them. You see Jonny (Bairstow) do it all the time, he did it on day one to David Warner, he did it in 2019 to Steve (Smith)," Cummins told reporters. England captain Ben Stokes was keen to move on from the incident but added he would not want to win in such a fashion at the end of an over.

Lord's Cricket Ground, London CNN —Just Stop Oil protesters disrupted the first day of the second Ashes Test as one England cricketer carried an activist to the boundary. The protesters had emerged from the Grand Stand and sprinted onto the pitch after just one over. However, they fell short in their efforts to reach the wicket, with one of them stopped by the intervention of England wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. The report indicated the Bureau of Prisons’ failings were troubling not only because they did not safeguard Epstein but also because they “led to numerous questions about the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death” and denied Epstein’s victims justice. Two guards on duty the night of Epstein’s death later admitted to falsifying records at the time. According to the initial indictment against the two guards, on the night of Epstein’s suicide, both individuals repeatedly failed to complete the required prisoners check during their watch. On the day before he was found dead in his prison cell, Epstein was also allowed by prison staff to make an unmonitored phone call, despite prison policy requiring all phone calls to be monitored. In August 2021, two years after Epstein’s death, the BOP announced it would close Metropolitan Correctional Center, citing the need to improve conditions in the facility.

The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which owns Lord’s, sought to axe the match from the ground’s schedule before granting it a reprieve after some of its members protested. As a compromise, the MCC announced in March that it would host both the Eton vs. Harrow and Oxford vs. Cambridge fixtures for another five years, before another consultation with members. March 16 (Reuters) - A coalition of 14 attorneys general condemned payment networks majors including Visa Inc (V.N), American Express Co (AXP.N) and Mastercard Inc (MA.N) for pausing work on a merchant code to help detect suspicious gun sales in the United States. Visa, Mastercard and American Express did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment. Senators Bob Menendez and Elizabeth Warren have also called on federal regulators to help speed up the adoption of the MCC by payment networks. The MCC, aimed at identifying firearms sellers, would identify the type of store where consumers shopped, though not the individual items they bought. Senators Bob Menendez and Elizabeth Warren on Wednesday called on federal regulators to issue guidance to speed the adoption of a new merchant category code (MCC) by payment networks to identify firearms sellers. The Republicans say the codes could be used to improperly track gun purchases. The letter noted reports that mass shooters had used credit or debit cards to buy the guns and ammunition they used. There are more than 40,000 U.S. gun deaths per year, and regulations around guns are again emerging as a major political issue. On Tuesday, U.S. President Joe Biden issued an executive order that reinforced background checks for gun buyers.
The Justice Department hasn't released its investigation into Jeffrey Epstein's death. Gloria Allred, who represents 20 Epstein victims, asked the DOJ inspector general for answers. "Many of Mr. Epstein's victims question how and why the system failed to prevent the death of Jeffrey Epstein," Allred wrote in the letter. Horowitz launched an investigation into the circumstances of Epstein's death soon after he was found dead in his jail cell. "It is unfair that the victims of Jeffrey Epstein continue to be denied the knowledge of the conditions which existed at MCC that led to Mr. Epstein's death," Allred wrote.
Jeffrey Epstein's death in a federal jail was seen as a shocking Justice Department failure. But more than three years later, the office still hasn't released its report into the circumstances of Epstein's death. "We all took it by surprise," Mark Epstein told Insider. Barr tasked the Justice Department's inspector general, Michael Horowitz, and the FBI with investigating "the circumstances of Mr. Epstein's death." Mark Epstein told Insider that he spoke to his brother about once a month in the years before his death.
New York CNN —Visa, Mastercard and Discover announced they will pause a plan to implement a new merchant category code for the nation’s gun retailers after political pressure from Republicans. In the wake of mass shootings, some financial companies, including Mastercard and Visa, have explored the possibility of tracking gun sales through their payment systems. The merchant category code (MCC) system would have separately categorized sales at gun and ammunition stores. Nearly every retail item has a merchant category code. Accordingly, Visa is pausing implementation of the MCC.”It’s the latest example of companies changing their plans based on pressure from Republican lawmakers.
The Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO) approved the new merchant category code (MCC) in September to help detect suspicious firearms and ammunition sales to combat gun violence. A Mastercard representative said on Thursday via email that such bills would cause "inconsistency" in how the code could be applied by merchants, banks and payment networks. "It's for that reason that we have decided to pause work on the implementation of the firearms-specific MCC," said the Mastercard representative, Seth Eisen. Accordingly, Visa is pausing implementation of the MCC," Visa said in a statement sent by a spokesperson. The moves mark a setback for gun-control activists, though the payment networks stopped short of saying they would reject the code outright.
"I don't want card companies to raise interest rates or fees on merchants as a way to dissuade them" from selling guns and ammunition, Owen told Reuters. Visa Inc (V.N) declined to comment on the state bills. Other payment card companies Discover, Mastercard Inc and (MA.N) American Express Co (AXP.N) did not respond to requests for comment. Owen, the Mississippi state legislator, said he expects that payment companies could address any technical issues the bills could create. "I think the credit card companies are going to have to adapt on a state-by-state basis," Owen said.

Football or soccer? It’s complicated …

Football, or soccer, has been around for centuries with its roots dating back over 2,000 years ago, but it was not until 1863 that England’s Football Association (the FA) cemented the sport’s full name of Association Football when they established the game’s first rules. Courtesy of U.S. Soccer and National Soccer Hall of FameBy the time association football and its round ball made its way across the Atlantic, American Football was already the popular game claiming the name of football. Unlike association football, American football is a game played mostly with one’s hands and uses an oval ball. Fast forward to 1974 and the United States Soccer Football Association (USSFA) – the sport’s governing body in the US – distanced itself from the word football by changing its name to the United States Soccer Federation, commonly referred to as the USSF (US Soccer). In places where football can be ambiguous, soccer is usefully precise.”In 1994, soccer fever reached a highpoint as the US hosted the World Cup.

New York CNN —Two dozen Republican attorneys general warned Visa, American Express and MasterCard on Tuesday not to go ahead with their plans to add a new merchant category code for gun retailers. In a letter to the CEOs of the card giants, the officials expressed serious concern that adopting a new sales code for gun stores would harm the constitutional rights of gunowners and potentially violate consumer protection and antitrust laws. Previously, gun store sales were classified under a general merchandise or sporting goods category. In other words, legal gun purchases won’t be blocked by this new merchant category code, or MCC. “We do not believe private companies should serve as moral arbiters,” Visa said in a blog post last week.
